Today we are well past the recruiting process of posting job openings in a newspaper and going through the painstaking process of interviewing and filtering candidates to fill the need for an open position within a company. As IT recruiters, we have the challenge of filling positions within a project in a market where there is a big difference between the availability of qualified talent and the demand for them.

Technology has helped us enormously in this task. Companies have looked for ways to improve their recruiting metrics as competition in the technology sector has increased and there is no better way to do this than by actually using technology tools for this difficult task.

Applicant tracking systems have evolved massively from just filing CVs to fully automating the storage and processing of resumes. I have seen recruiting processes designed around these tools to help improve metrics such as time to fill, time to hire, quality of hire, selection ratio, recruitment funnel effectiveness, cost per hire, and overall recruitment performance.

Some of the most commonly used ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) in the technology industry are LinkedIn, Greenhouse, Recruitee, JazzHR, and Jobvite. Although most of them share similar characteristics, there are some important factors that you have to consider when choosing which to use for your recruitment process. Some considerations are whether they can be customized to your needs (most can be), costs, analytics modules, and which one can automate most processes in your recruitment workflow.

Today, Fullstack Labs uses a mix of applicant tracking systems to store, process, and assist in the screening process of our potential employees. This is very important to ensure that recruiters can manage hundreds of candidates' selection processes at one time.

Although Applicant Tracking Systems can be configured to match your recruiting process in this market, it does not seem to be enough to keep up with the demand. Software companies are also seeing the need to build in-house tools to be even more competitive than using what is currently on the market. Bigger companies are nowadays investing in building their own systems to meet the demand. These in-house technologies not only allow companies to design a recruiting process around their needs but also help lower the time to hire.
